Barbara Clayton's major career was in the laboratory, particularly at Great Ormond Street. Later she moved to Southampton, becoming a highly successful dean of its medical school, one of Britain's rare institutions that has experimented with new educational methods. She has served on numerous government committees, most notably the one advising on the possible harmful effects of lead on children. She was also president of the Royal College of Pathologists.
