![]() Whitchurch-on-Thames, 07/09/95 | Douglas Black's dour Scottish exterior conceals the sparkling wit and humanity that lie within. A brilliant writer and one of medicine's scholars, Black is also a foremost expert on the kidney in both health and disease. He has been president of the Royal College of Physicians, and of the BMA. The Black report, showing how much deprivation there still is within our society and the harm this produces, did not endear him to the Thatcher government, which did its (unsuccessful) best to ensure that it got no publicity.
