Josephine Barnes
b 1912, obstetrician and gynaecologist, Charing Cross Hospital and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital, London

Holland Park, London, 21/07/95
In the postwar years some people said that it was impossible for a woman to break into the male bastions of medicine and to have a normal family life as well. "Jo" Barnes did this highly successfully, becoming a teaching hospital specialist in a particularly male medical preserve: obstetrics and gynaecology. She had a prominent role in the public debate over important issues such as the 1967 Abortion Act. After retirement she continued her high profile activities, including as president of the BMA.
