A mother who developed cervical cancer after twice being told her smear tests were clear has won her case in the Irish Supreme Court, in a ruling that will set a benchmark for resolving dozens of similar cases in Ireland’s cervical screening scandal.1

Ruth Morrissey, now aged 38 and terminally ill with cancer, and her husband Paul sued the Irish Health Service Executive, which operated the CervicalCheck national screening programme, and two multinationals to whom the executive contracted out screening tests.
