Re: The Kurjak affair

Dear Editor,

I read with continuing interest the saga revolving around the Zagreb University medical school, prof. Matko Marusic – editor of the Croatian Medical Journal, Dr. Kurjak and the dean of the medical school. (Human rights organisation condemns university’s attempt to discredit one of its staff, Natasa Skaricic BMJ 2009;338:b2455 20th of June 2009.) As if it had not already been a dreadful story, to now learn of the attempt to send prof. Marusic for a psychiatric assessment – as a solution, instead of dealing with the root of the problem (Dr. Kurjak’s articles in medical journals), is simply appalling.

The one bright light in it all was the fact that prof. Matko Marusic was exonerated but missing is any sign that the culprits will ever be brought to justice.

What action is being taken by the rector of the university of Zagreb and by the Minister of Health and Higher Education to uphold international academic standards by bringing to justice those who colluded in the serial plagiarism and brought disrepute to a fine institution?

Gentle retirement does not seem sufficient “reward” for three years’ of persecution.

Yours sincerely,

Nicholas Koleszar MB.BS
