For many doctors working in developing countries internet access is painfully slow or simply unavailable. My copy of the BMJ arrives typically 10 days after the publication date. Extending the time between publication of an article and selection of responses will not only allow time for complex replies to be composed, it will also allow more time for doctors in developing countries to express their views.
