Re: Medicine will always remain a good career choice

I am a big fan of Des Spence and love reading his weekly column, as it is undoubtedly interesting, witty and carries a message. This week though I beg to differ. His assault on medicine is misguided and misplaced. Medicine is not boring but stimulating and challenging. No one should dare to call it as humdrum. Every day brings new questions, new diagnostic enigmas and thrilling encounters. No quiz, puzzle or conundrum is match for the clinical riddles which we tackle on a daily basis. Successfully managing an acutely unwell patient provides an adrenaline rush of the most challenging roller coaster ride. Then there is the thankful smile, a few kind words of gratitude or better still a card hand made by a young child claiming that you are their favourite doctor. It is enough to keep your heart singing. I am not sure if there is a table tennis table in our mess – I have never felt the need to go there.
