Dear Editor, There is a good point in focusing attention on G.B Shaw's play The Doctor's Dilemma. I find BMJ very interesting, challenging and not least, very rewarding, when taking into account many topics, among which ethics and a sound preparation in the main fields of medicine. I am also glad that BMJ promotes a policy of dealing with patients and health problems by using a multilateral approach, enhancing the human aspect of medicine and making us think beyond the "pure" scientific aspects of the disease. I must congratulate you and your staff for all your efforts. I will undoubtedly "advertise" your proposal for November 20th, to the managers of my hospital and among my colleagues. But, at least, I will surely plan a reading session and some discussions with the staff of my clinic. Competing interests: None declared |

McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine and The Institute for the Medical Humanities of The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston are sponsoring a centennial anniversary reader's theatre production of Shaw's "The Doctor's Dilemma" at 7 p.m., 20 November 2006, at The Strand Theatre in Galveston Texas. Roles will be read by Osler Faculty and Student Scholars and by faculty and students from The Institute for the Medical Humanities. This production has been made possible by the generous financial support of C. Joan Richardson, M.D., Scholar in the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, UTMB. Professional videotaping of the event has been made possible by additional funding from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. A copy of the videotape will be sent for the BMJ archives, as Dr. Godlee requested. We are looking forward to this event and are delighted to participate in the worldwide centennial celebration of Shaw's famous play.

This is a rather slow rapid response to your inspiring editorial about the centenary of Shaw's play. Today there will be 2 readings of The Doctor's Dilemma taking place in Exeter at the Peninsula Medical School. In the afternoon a group of about 30 medical students in the 3rd year of their course will read Acts 1&2 of the play followed by a facilitated discussion. In the evening there will be a rehearsed play reading performed by staff and postgraduate students from Exeter University Department of Drama. The audience will include medical students, local clinicians, allied medical staff and family and friends. There will be a question and answer discussion with cast and audience afterwards.
