Shattered Lives: Children Who Live with Courage and Dignity Camila Batmanghelidjh Hardback, ISBN-10: 1-84310-434-2 ISBN-13: 9781843104346, 176pp, May 2006, £13.99, $19.95 “Having Camila write to me in that way was a truly amazing experience. There are no words to describe the feelings that my letter provoked. My chapter brought about a profound sense of closure.” Daisy “It's so clear, it hurts.” Ruby Wax “Shattered Lives is a much needed and timely book. No one understands or has done more Batmanghelidjh. She responds to them with respect and understanding and has broken through where so many others have failed. In an age of widening disparities between rich and poor, this is a book of hope. It is also a call for action from so many more of us to expand and support the opportunities that Camila and Kids Company have forged. They need to be replicated across Britain if we are to avoid creating an entire generation of excluded and destroyed young people.” Jon Snow, journalist and broadcaster “This book must be read by everyone - social workers, therapists, teachers and policy makers - who touch the lives of children who have been shattered by fear, humiliation and rejection. It provides insight, hope and respect for the children who have survived against the odds, and for all those who care about them.” Richard Bowlby “'I can't remember ever having been so affected by a book about the country I live in. Each child you write about tells me something new about the kids I see on the street.” Danny Kruger, Chief Leader Writer, The Daily Telegraph The above is taken from the Kids Company website, http://kidsco.org.uk Futher to your request for a good read, this is the most moving thing I've read in a long time. Should be read by all who come into contact with children in work ( & all parents!).It made me realise how I too judged the most out of control children in the past, eg when treating them as a G.P. , and how our society fails to help these children from the most deprived backgrounds. We try to protect ourselves from these eg violent children instead of reaching out to them. Their web site is amazingly inspiring. It would be wonderful if the book could get reviewed in the BMJ, raising the profile of this incredible charity. Thanks for your consideration!
