Some years ago, after 9/11, I made the decision to never travel to the US on conferences or pleasure, based on experiences recounted to me by colleagues and the nature of the Patriot Act that means that innocent individuals are at risk of loss of liberty in a country that used to pride itself on freedom of the individual.
