Ray Moynihan's article (vol 329, p 1294) gives an incorrect
impression of our coverage of testosterone patches. He sets out a number
of substantial charges but does not detail which of the several stories he
mentions fall down in his opinion on which charge. As a consequence, all
the stories mentioned appear to have failed on all counts.
This is far from the case. For example, there is no mention that the
New Scientist story states clearly that the research was sponsored by
Proctor and Gamble and that it identifies the narrow patient group
studied.
We are happy to be held accountable for any perceived inadequacies in
our reporting, but to have this done in misleading fashion is highly
ironic.
