Richard has highlighted some of the issues (1), such as poverty, illiteracy, and child mortality. A number of additional issues such as poor health infrastructure, HIV\AIDS, illegal trafficking, corruption, hunger, and rampant indifference to public health mandate that series of issues are needed to address the problem. Since BMJ is widely read and considered authoritative universally; it would be a wise thing to start a series on health problems of this part of the world on periodic basis. It is a well-known fact that despite the presence of widespread disease and disability; authentic data from this region is dismal. Presence of limited number of published studies makes it particularly difficult to start studying any issue afresh. Policymakers from these regions can then know atleast, about the pressing issues in front of them, which need to be addressed; if problems are addressed comprehensively in prospective issue\s.
