Re: Response to the obituary

Kurt Semm's obituarist (BMJ 16 August 2003) names Palmer as an American surgeon. Raoul Palmer in fact was a great French gynaecologist who taught most of the world's tubal surgeons before the advent of IVF. His workplace, life and love were Paris.

I had the honour to be present, in the 1960's, at a dinner in a small inn in the Black Forest which Hans Frangenheim gave for Raoul Palmer and Patrick Steptoe - the three great pioneers of laparoscopy, all Europeans.

Yours etc
Herbert Reiss
