People with schizophrenia have two to four times the rate of diabetes as the general population, prior to any treatment with psychotropic drugs. In addition, most studies show a similar effectiveness of typical and atypical drugs. Atypicals are being promoted because of their benign profile, which has to do with reduced EPS. Recent research has shown that atypicals are associated with insulin resistance, etc. Their profile can no longer be considered benign, but rather to have different concerns, namely metabolic problems.
