Re: Diabetic Retinopathy

I was surprised to find in the article on 'Vascular Complications of
Diabetes'(15th April), that the example of 'background diabetic
retinopathy' was infact showing pre-proliferative disease. There appeared
to be a cotton wool spot suggestive of retinal ischaemia in the nasal
field. This, in addition to the blot haemorrhages encroaching the
macular, also suggested maculopathy.
Failure to recognise these changes could lead to complacency on the
part of BMJ readers-a situation definately to avoid.
