I broke a tooth on a piece of grit in bread. I had not seen a dentist for about 10 years because I have had no problems with my teeth. The dentist noted leukoplakia and referred me to hospital. Biopsy was severe displasia and an excision of the floor of my mouth was scheduled. During the surgery, an invasive carcinoma was found and removed. Had I not been forced to go to the dentist, this would not have been found until it became ulcerated and far more problematic. Full marks to the dentist for spotting it, zero to the Government in that there is no routine check of dental health.
