The authors of this clinical review, Danielle Abbott and colleagues (BMJ 2010:3401:c3414, doi:10.1136/bmj.c3414), would like to clarify a point in the second sentence of the second paragraph. They confirm that the external anal sphincter and the internal anal sphincter are both circular in nature and that the sentence should therefore have said that a third degree perineal tear “can affect the external anal sphincter (circular fibres) or the internal anal sphincter (including the longitudinal fibres of the longitudinal smooth muscle layer between internal and external sphincters).”
