Anthony Paul Ryley Eckersley ("Tony") was born in Haddington, Scotland in 1947 but spent most of his childhood and education in Cumbria. He returned to Scotland when he was accepted initially to study forestry at Aberdeen University. Transferring into the medical school after a year, he continued there until he graduated in 1973. While at university he met his wife, Anne, and they were married in 1972.
After completing his training in Inverness, Tony embarked on a career in general practice. He worked in the Southside Road and then the Crown medical practices where he established himself as an enthusiastic trainer. He was the first GP in Inverness to institute a clause in his employment contract that enabled him to undertake a sabbatical, and in the autumn of 1985 travelled to Canada to locum in the prairie province of Saskatchewan for six months, braving the –40°C temperatures of a Canadian
