Judges at the Roses Design Awards 2009 said that the building "breaks new design ground." It includes a full height atrium, which the judges said provides "levels of space and light far removed from traditional institutional care."

The hospital opened earlier this year. Robert Calderwood, chief executive of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said that he was delighted at the recognition being given to its design.

"The building is large and airy with modern and uncluttered purpose built patient areas, consulting rooms, and patient transport hubs," he said. "Patients and staff also benefit from the latest technologies installed in the new hospital, including state of the art MRI [magnetic resonance imaging] scanners. The ‘green’ design of the hospital has a healthy regard for energy saving."
