A fasting plasma glucose is recommended by the American and Canadian Diabetes Associations (ADA and CDA) for screening obese young people for prediabetes, but a recent Canadian study says it is inadequate.
In this two year prospective longitudinal study, the researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, will examine the health consequences of obesity in young people and will determine the prevalence of glucose intolerance and metabolic syndrome based on recommended International Diabetes Federation criteria at baseline in obese children and adolescents. The researchers will also study any changes in glycaemic status while the children are enrolled in a weight management programme.
Two hundred and fifty young people who referred themselves or were referred by doctors to McMaster Hospital for help managing their weight will be enrolled in the study. At baseline prediabetes was defined as impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or both, according to CDA and ADA criteria
