A part of GPs’ income will in future be allocated only to those doctors who are part of a successful commissioning group, under government plans to shake up the NHS.
The fact that doctors will have to perform well as commissioners to earn so called “quality premiums” was revealed by the Department of Health for England on 22 July in a consultation document that put more flesh on the bones of the recent white paper (BMJ 2010;341:c3796, 14 Jul, doi:10.1136/bmj.c3796).
The consultation document, Liberating the NHS: Commissioning for Patients, gives details of how the new system will work when control of most of the NHS’s budget passes to GP commissioning groups called consortiums while primary care trusts and strategic health authorities are phased out by 2013.
