Government confirms that food policy agency is moving to Whitehall

    The Food Standards Agency in England is to be carved up so that nutritional policy will now fall to the Department of Health and responsibility for food labelling will go to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

    The agency will retain responsibility for policy and enforcement in food safety and its role in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland remains unchanged.

    In announcing the reorganisation on 20 July the government has quashed rumours that the Food Standards Agency was to be axed in its entirety.
