OnExamination Quiz

Children’s respiratory illnesses

The answers to this question, and more questions on this topic, are available from www.onexamination.com/endgames until midnight on Wednesday.

This week’s quiz is on children’s respiratory illnesses and is taken from the OnExamination revision questions for a variety of exams.

Presentation 1

A 6 year old girl with disabling cerebral palsy presents with recurrent chest infections.

Presentation 2

A 2 year old girl presents acutely with a chest infection. She has had a few similar episodes in the past, which were treated by her general practitioner. You understand that there was a problem with severe constipation and meconium ileus after birth.

Presentation 3

A 4 year old girl presents with a troublesome nocturnal cough. Her parents state that otherwise she is well, except for a little shortness of breath when she runs around in the garden.

Presentation 4

A 5 year old presents with recurrent lower respiratory tract infections. He has had four courses of antibiotics in the past year. You send a note to the radiologist because the chest radiograph seems to have been mislabelled as the heart shadow is on the right. There is bilateral lower lobe consolidation.

For each of the above presentations select the most likely diagnosis from the list below.

A Asthma
B Chronic lung disease of prematurity
C Congenital lobar emphysema
D Cystic fibrosis
E Drug misuse
F Hypogammaglobulinaemia
G Kartagener’s syndrome
H Primary ciliary dyskinesia
I Recurrent aspiration
J Respiratory failure secondary to nerve injury
K Whooping cough
