European Court gets tough over medical school restrictions

The governments of Austria and Belgium are worried that they will have too many applicants to their medical schools from other European countries if they follow a ruling of the European Court. The court ruled that their schools must not discriminate against European Union applicants from beyond their borders.

The two European states received a letter from the EU commission on 24 January demanding changes in what it described as “discriminatory” rules on university admissions. It follows the court's decision this January that condemned both countries' introduction of quotas that restrict the number of medical students who are not resident in that particular state. …
