Integrated care is better for psychoses

Integrated mental health treatment that includes training in social skills and patients' family involvement seems to be more successful than standard care in reducing symptoms in people with a first episode of schizophrenia spectrum disorder. A randomised multicentre trial by Petersen and colleagues (p 602) included 547 patients and followed them up for two years. Patients who received integrated treatment had less severe symptoms and less substance misuse, had better adherence to treatment, and were more satisfied with their care than the patients who received standard care.
