In the United Kingdom, inequalities in health as well as those in income and wealth have continually been widening since the 1980s despite the current government's repeatedly expressed intention to reduce them. On page 1016, Shaw and colleagues warn that even though eight years have passed since the election of New Labour, data for a complete assessment of changes in life expectancy are still not available. However, on the basis of the analysis of the available data, they argue that more potent and redistributive policies are needed if the issue of inequalities is to be addressed seriously.
