Clinical syndromes seem adequate for targeting drug prescribing

Use of a simple classification of clinical syndromes to prioritise children for antibiotic treatment in an area where malaria is endemic is effective in identifying children with invasive bacterial infections. In an observational study of 11 847 paediatric admissions in a Kenyan district hospital, Berkley and colleagues (p 995) found that the clinical syndromes in the World Health Organization's guideline effectively predicted the presence of bacteriaemia, meningitis, or Plasmodium parasitaemia and identified the need for antibiotic or antimalaria treatment.
