New model predicts short term survival of cancer patients

A simple mathematical model predicts the probability of death after surgery for colorectal cancer. Tekkis and colleagues (p 1196) analysed data on 7374 patients from the database of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and developed a predictive model for postoperative mortality based on five risk factors: patient's age, American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) grade, non-elective surgery, cancer resection, and Dukes's staging. The model can provide patients and surgeons with an estimate of survival from surgery and help decide the treatment plan.
