Mortality after gastro-oesophageal cancer surgery is affected by preoperative conditionand in the United Kingdom mortality is higher than in other countries. On p 1192 McCulloch and collaborators analysed data from 669 patients on the ASCOT (Assessment of Stomach and Oesophageal Cancer Outcomes from Treatment) database. The overall mortality was 12% and 10% of patients needed a second operation. Poor health status before the operation and lower annual volume of cases predicted higher mortality and medical complications.
