Metformin induces ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and hyperandrogenic anovulation. In a systematic review and meta-analysis, Lord and his collaborators from Australia (p 951) analysed data from 13 studies and 543 women. They found that metformin is an effective treatment for anovulation, but it is associated with a notable incidence of gastrointestinal disturbance, and its use long term and in early pregnancy needs further evaluation. The authors say the evidence supports its use as a first line agent in this group of patients.
