A quarter of the medical jobs advertised in the NHS are for non-standard posts

Nearly a quarter of the medical jobs advertised in the NHS do not follow standard terms of employment and may exploit doctors. Dosani and colleagues (p 961) analysed a random sample of 4949 non-consultant jobs advertised in BMJ Careers in 2001-2. They found that 1150 (23%) did not conform to the standard NHS grades and a quarter breached the European Working Time Directive. Most of the posts were expected to attract doctors from outside the European Economic Area. The authors raise concerns about the educational component of these posts and the misleading job titles used by the trusts in advertising them.
