Severe acute respiratory syndrome demands strict control

The rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong and its high mortality call for strict control measures. In a fast tracked paper, Yeung and Yu (p 850) give an account of the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong during 14 March to 1 April 2003, which amounted to 635 cases. They describe the history of the outbreak, laboratory and pathological findings, and the treatment used in these cases. They recommend that health authorities consider early introduction of quarantine procedures and intensive public health education. In an accompanying editorial, Zambon (p 831) says that integrating data from epidemiological and laboratory studies will provide the evidence needed to better understand the nature of SARS.
