After surgical treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism, the risk of
developing renal stones remains high for 10 years. In a case-control
study Mollerup and colleagues compared the prevalence of stone
development in patients and matched controls from the general
population (p 807). Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism have an
increased risk of stones as much as 10 years before diagnosis of
primary hyperparathyroidism. After surgery, the risk is reduced but is
still 8.3% higher than the background risk of the general population.
