Celecoxib is as effective as other NSAIDs

The newly developed COX 2 specific inhibitor, celecoxib, is as effective as other non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for controlling symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis but causes fewer gastrointestinal complications. These findings are supported by the results of a systematic review of randomised trials carried out by Deeks and colleagues (p 619). Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly prescribed for patients with arthritis but their long term use has been associated with the development of serious gastrointestinal problems.
