Disabled Gulf veterans have high rates of psychiatric disorder

A two phase cohort study by Ismail and colleagues (p 576) shows that most psychiatric disorders are 2-10 times more common in disabled Gulf veterans than in non-disabled Gulf veterans. However, disabled Gulf veterans and similarly disabled non-Gulf veterans do not differ in their pattern of mental health problems, except that disabled veterans have a threefold increase in somatoform disorders. Rates of post-traumatic stress disorder are not higher in Gulf veterans than other veterans, suggesting that ill health in Gulf veterans is not explained by events or exposures conventionally understood to be psychologically traumatic.
