HPV is linked to abnormal cervical smear results

Infection with human papillomavirus precedes the development of low and high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. In a study in over 10 000 women Kjaer and colleagues (p 572) found that women who tested positive for the virus on enrolment to the study had a greater risk of having atypical cells at two year follow up than women who tested negative. The association between persistent human papillomavirus infection and high grade cervical lesions was more pronounced among women aged over 25.
