Association of moulds with severe asthma

Sensitisation to moulds is a powerful risk factor for severe asthma in adults. A survey by Zureik and colleagues (p 411) of 1132 adults with asthma shows that sensitisation to moulds such as Alternaria alternata and Cladosporium herbarum was more common in patients with severe asthma. These results may be relevant for many patients and should be taken into account for primary prevention and management of asthma.
