Deaths from alcoholic liver disease are rising

The number of deaths from alcoholic liver disease has risen in the West Midlands in the past decade, reflecting a nationwide trend. Deaths from primary liver disease increased from 6 per 100 000 population in 1993 to 13 per 100 000 in 2000, and almost exclusively as a result of alcoholic liver disease. Fisher and colleagues (p 312) say that halting or reversing the trend requires further education of the public on the risk of fatal liver disease from excessive alcohol consumption.
