Rupture of membranes before the onset of labour is an additional
important risk factor for early onset group B streptococcal sepsis in
infants. A case-control study by Oddie and colleagues (p 308) confirmed
the well established risk factors: prematurity, intrapartum fever, and
premature rupture of membranes. The study found that to prevent or
ameliorate three quarters of cases of streptococcal sepsis, 16% of all
women in labour would need to be given antibiotics.
