Small lacerations in the hand need not be sutured

Conservative management of uncomplicated lacerations to the hand produces similar cosmetic and functional outcomes as suturing. In a trial by Quinn and colleagues (p 299) 91 patients with full thickness lacerations no longer than 2 cm were randomised to receive sutures or conservative treatment. Patients rated the pain of their treatment, and wounds were assessed after 8-10 days and then again after three months. Outcomes from conservative and suturing treatment were similar, but conservative treatment was faster and less painful.
