Lower haemoglobin levels in women are not due to iron deficiency

Lower haemoglobin concentrations in women are not due to iron deficiency, according to Waalen and colleagues (p 137). They report the findings of their ongoing study in patients attending a health appraisal centre in San Diego which involved 25 559 healthy, white participants aged 26-99 (12 731 men and 12 828 women). They found that mean haemoglobin concentrations were greater in men than in women at any age---and that there was a 10 g/l difference in mean haemoglobin concentrations between men and women aged 26-55 at any given transferrin saturation or serum ferritin concentration.
