Lower haemoglobin concentrations in women are not due to iron
deficiency, according to Waalen and colleagues (p 137). They report the
findings of their ongoing study in patients attending a health
appraisal centre in San Diego which involved 25 559 healthy, white
participants aged 26-99 (12 731 men and 12 828 women). They found
that mean haemoglobin concentrations were greater in men than in women
at any age
and that there was a 10 g/l difference in mean haemoglobin
concentrations between men and women aged 26-55 at any given
transferrin saturation or serum ferritin
concentration.
