The potential for diagnosing heart failure by serological testing for
natriuretic peptides is reinforced by a study by Hobbs and colleagues
(p 1498). A new assay for N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide
(NT-proBNP) exhibited a very high negative predictive value for heart
failure in a large population of community based patients. This means
that a diagnosis of heart failure could effectively be ruled out on the
basis of normal concentrations of NT-proBNP. Patients with raised
concentrations would still need confirmation of diagnosis by echocardiography.
