No excess of epilepsy in prisoners

A link between epilepsy and criminality has long been believed to exist, but the epidemiological evidence for this claim is of uncertain validity. Fazel and colleagues (p 1495) report a systematic review of seven surveys based on clinical interviews of 3111 prisoners and conclude that the prevalence of chronic epilepsy is about 0.7%, which is no greater than that in the general population of similar age. These findings should reduce the stigma associated with having epilepsy.
