Inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase-2 with etoricoxib provides rapid and
effective treatment for acute gouty arthritis. Schumacher and
colleagues (p 1488) assessed the safety and efficacy of etoricoxib compared with indometacin, the standard treatment for acute gout. Etoricoxib showed comparable efficacy to indometacin for all end points
measured, including patients' assessment of pain, and resulted in
fewer drug related adverse experiences. This study, which shows that
selective, potent, and rapid inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase-2 is
sufficient to treat acute gouty arthritis effectively, may serve as a
basis for future trial design.
