General practitioners have a poor awareness of the clinical importance
of impaired glucose tolerance. A quantitative and qualitative study by
Wylie and colleagues with 34 general practitioners in five primary care
groups (p 1190) revealed a reluctance to screen for and treat patients
with impaired glucose tolerance. Reasons included increase in workload,
lack of resources, and pessimism about the effectiveness of lifestyle
interventions. Health education through schools and the media should be
adopted instead.
