Driving when sleepy, driving after five hours' sleep or less, and
driving between 2 am and 5 am are associated with a substantial increase in the risk of a car crash resulting in serious injury or
death, according to a case-control study of 571 drivers involved in
road crashes by Connor et al (p1125) . Such cases are responsible for up to a fifth of all such crashes. The authors conclude that a
reduction in these behaviours may reduce the incidence of injury crashes by up to 10%.
