Each year one million people die and 10 million are injured on the
world's roads. A systematic review including 15 controlled trials, 14 of which were in children, by Duperrex and colleagues (p 1129) shows
that safety education for pedestrians improves children's knowledge of
how to cross roads safely and changes their observed road crossing
behaviour. The effect on injuries to pedestrians, however, is unknown.
The authors found no trials that focused on other vulnerable groups,
such as elderly people, and none of the trials were conducted in low
income or middle income countries.
