Media coverage was responsible for patient safety

Although patient safety was identified in the medical literature in the 1950's, it was coverage by the news media coverage that prompted the medical profession to develop a systems-orientated approach to patient safety approach. In this week's reviews section (p 1044), Michael Millenson says that it was journalists and the media who held up the mirror to the medical profession and persuaded them it to adopt a systematic approach to error that , which had been available for many years.
