European union law affects health policy

Official European union health policy is currently something of a Cinderella, but over the coming years is likely to grow despite the diversity of its member states healthcare systems. Although the union cannot use its health policy powers to cut across member states' rights to run their own healthcare systems, union law has affected health policy. Ben Duncan (p 1027) explains how the union and its institutions work and how they can be influenced. He details the development of European union level discussions on healthcare issues, but warns that those who want to see major change in their influence may be disappointed.
