Screening for hip dysplasia can be improved

In a quality improvement paper on page 1031, Maxwell and colleagues show that improved staff training, increased use of ultrasound, and quicker access to paediatric orthopaedic surgeons reduced the number of children with developmental dysplasia of the hip diagnosed after the age of 6 months. However, some children with known risk factors are still being missed and more steps are needed to further reduce late presentation. Early diagnosis, however, will not eliminate the need for surgical intervention in some children.
